Conde Nast Traveler Names Oyster bay Hotel Best City Hotel

The Publication that annually lists their 'Gold Standard Hotels', this year picked Oyster Bay Hotel as The Best City Hotel in Dar, Tanzania 2013

The Oyster Bay, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Every city should have a sassy boutique hotel as good as this; that it's in booming but messy Dar es Salaam makes it all the more extraordinary. Smart, intimate and stylish, the hotel is in a completely reconfigured colonial villa overlooking the Indian Ocean. Interiors are the epitome of contemporary, East African urban cool, with ethnic artefacts displayed museum-like in stripped-back rooms. The building could have absorbed 20 bedrooms or more, but the owner (who also owns beautiful Beho Beho lodge in the Selous Game Reserve) opted for just eight massive all-white suites, with free-standing baths and walk-through rain showers in the bathrooms. French windows open onto little balconies with ocean views, and for most of the year a sea breeze and gently rotating ceiling fan make the air-conditioning unnecessary. There are markets, shops, galleries and caf├ęs nearby (the easy-going staff will tell you where). And excellent home-cooked meals (giant Zanzibar prawns in coconut curry; heavenly lobster thermidor) can be shared dinner-party-style along with generous quantities of fine South African wines, or taken poolside in the walled garden with its ancient, twisted fig tree.
